Abstract

International service work provides social work students with hands-on experience to learn about the global issues of poverty, social justice, and social services in the context of participation in community-service projects. The benefits of such experiences to the students ' academic, personal, and professional development are the focus of the integration and reflection process for most students. As a group leader of international service programs, the author reflects on the challenges of facilitating learning experiences that transcend the personal gains and encourage longterm community building.
