Abstract

In our narrative, supported by our practice and our experience, we discuss the difficulties of being American-trained social workers and trying to influence change through field work in Vietnam.   We will examine and reflect upon our personal and professional growth through interactions at the Da Nang Social Welfare Center, focusing on a 13-year-old male orphan and the environment in which he lives.  This paper will also share our experiences with the University of Da Nang and the ways in which we tried to create sustainability. Our involvement, as students working with the Vietnamese lifted the profession of social work off the pages of text books and into reality.
