Abstract

The Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies (Buder Center) is a premier graduate degree scholarship program in social work committed to the education of American Indian/Alaska Native MSW students. The Buder Center has made many contributions over the years and continues to grow in exciting and innovative directions. The paper will begin by considering the social, economic, and historical circumstances that make Native-focused training in social work critical to the future of Indian Country. Next, the paper will discuss the founding of the center and pay tribute to the many Native and non-Native elders who contributed to the founding of the Center and the shaping of its vision, mission and goals. The paper will conclude by presenting the progress of the Center over the last 25 years.
