Abstract

The following narrative describes the experiences of women in small-scale mining and other economic activities at Kefetia, in the Upper East region of Ghana. The ways in which economic activities of women are influenced by social factors—such as the culturally determined position of women in the Ghanaian society—are discussed. The cultural challenges faced by these hardworking women account for their vulnerability in the mines.
