Abstract

Teaching students about privilege is a challenge. In this narrative, the authors describe how they came to understand privilege. When they experienced the vividness of a book or the actual life of another, the neural pathways that mediate empathy were stimulated. These profound empathy moments helped them to understand privilege, and can be simulated in the classroom to help students to understand privilege as well.
