Abstract

This narrative discusses the human-canine relationship within the context of the family and explains how the family is one contributing factor in dog behavior. Described are problems associated with the characteristics of anthropomorphism and placing blame solely upon the dog. Strategies for eliminating the symptom include examining the pet within the context of the family and assessing the dynamic as it contributes to creating the symptom. For the pet professional operating from a cybernetics perspective, it may be beneficial to take on the role of "therapist" in order to enlighten and work on the problem with the family unit as a whole.
