Abstract

This narrative describes the experiences of an American and visiting scholar living in Ghana, West Africa, and
teaching an undergraduate social work course at the University of Ghana. The narrative will explain how the author,
as a foreigner in an emerging country, helped indigenous social work students find their voice and develop bestpractice
effective assessment and problem-solving strategies based on their own cultural norms, practices, and beliefs.
The narrative also explores the greater depth of understanding of Ghana's social problems from the insights,
effort, and observations of students who were involved in their first college-level, participatory learning experience.
