Weeping for Philomena: Reflections of an Adoption Administrator

Abstract

The author, a former adoption administrator, reflects on the movie, Philomena, the story of a birthmother’s fifty year search for her son taken from her in Ireland and placed for adoption in the United States.  Social Justice Issues related to adoption and the author’s evolving views on adoption practice are explored   Birthmother and Birthfather rights are discussed, as are issues of sealed adoption records and issues of intercountry adoption. Recommendations for adoption practice and adoption professionals are presented.
