NEW!! 3 Calls for Submissions on Racial Injustice & Systemic Racism

2020-11-19

The year 2020 has been filled with multiple crises, some new (COVID-19) and others that are as old as the nation itself. The most egregious of these is the systemic racism that undergirds the structures within which we live, work, and educate the next generation. Throughout the past year, many voices have begun to explicitly acknowledge the harm that systematic and systemic racism perpetuates. We at Reflections believe that we have a responsibility to support and further the hard work required to acknowledge and then respond to the multiple harms and tragic events caused by this racism. We also believe that the stories we share with each other can help us to learn from one other, continue to grow collectively, and better prepare the next generation of helping professionals. Such stories can also help to ensure that these times are not forgotten.

To these ends, Reflections is disseminating three (3) calls for manuscripts, all related to the experience of racism.  Authors are encouraged to submit their manuscripts to the call within which they believe their manuscript best fits. The key difference in the three calls is two-fold: the role from which the author is reflecting and the experience about which they are reflecting.

The foci of the three calls are these:

  • Priscilla Gibson's call is for the personal experiences of helping professionals (across fields) with racial injustice. Black Racial Injustice: Personal Reflections to Change Strategies is due February 15, 2021.
  • Patricia Gray's call is for authors who are practitioners in the helping professions, separate from the classroom setting. Practicing While Black is due March 15, 2021.
  • Tiffany Baffour and Shonda Lawrence are issuing A Call for Social Work Educators to Confront and Dismantle Systemic Racism Within Social Work Programs. The deadline for submissions is April 15,2021.

It is our fervent hope that these three calls will provide members of the helping professions opportunities to reflect on their personal, practice, and teaching experiences.  We look forward to publishing these reflections throughout 2021, thereby keeping our collective focus on the work that continues to be done in challenging and addressing the tenacious pervasiveness of racism in our personal and professional lives.
